The beautiful Flame of the Forest / La bella Flama del Bosque

Between February and March our Flame of the Forest (Erythrina fusca) are in full bloom. It is an expected event for us because of the beauty and the exoticism of the flower. Its deep orange color and their arrangement in clusters form an image that is a delight for our eyes.

But there is a tree that is the most enjoyed, due to its privileged position: in front of the restaurant and with the Concepción volcano as background. And every morning at breakfast time clients appear one after another:  the white-throated Magpie-Jay (Calocitta formosa) who come to sip the nectar that the flowers have accumulated in the coldness of the night.

Entre febrero y marzo nuestras Flamas del Bosque (Erythrina fusca) están en plena floración. Es un evento esperado por nosotros debido a la belleza y el exotismo de la flor. Su color naranja y su arreglo en racimos conforman una imagen que es un verdadero deleite para vista.

Pero hay un arbolito que es el que más disfrutamos, debido a su posición privilegiada: está frente al restaurante y tiene el volcán Concepción como fondo. Y cada mañana a la hora del desayuno aparecen sus comensales una tras otra: las urracas copetonas (Calocitta formosa) que vienen a libar el néctar que las flores han acumulado en la frescura de la noche.

Blooming Trees

It's February, we are half way into the dry season. The thirsty earth is covered with dry leaves. The greens are turning brown. Tourists are walking on the road here on the island, trying to warm their bodies cooled down by the cold winter of their countries. Everyone looks up toward the cloud turban covering the head of the Concepción volcano. One of them approaches me and says: What a beauty! And I agree with a nod and a smile. But we're not seeing the same thing. I'm seeing the flowers of the trees.

Árboles en flor

Estamos en febrero, a mediados de la estación seca. La tierra sedienta está cubierta de hojas secas. Los verdes se van tornando cafés. Se ven turistas en la carretera que andan aquí tratando de calentar sus cuerpos helados por el frío invierno de sus países. Todos ven hacia arriba, hacia el turbante de nubes que cubre la cabeza del volcán Concepción. Uno de ellos se acerca y me dice: ¡Qué belleza! Y yo le digo que sí con un gesto y una sonrisa. Pero en realidad no estamos viendo lo mismo. Yo estoy viendo las flores de los árboles.
