El noni es originario del sudeste asiático y fue introducido en Nicaragua hasta finales del siglo pasado. Para principios del presente, se popularizó como una cura para toda clase de enfermedades, alcanzando una gran demanda alrededor de 2004-2005. Aun cuando el noni tiene una larga historia de uso medicinal en países de Asia y el Pacífico y se conoce que su composición incluye diversos principios químicos como la escopoletina, la serotonina, los terpenos, los esteroles, la xeronina, el ácido ascórbico, hierro, zinc, selenio y otros, no existen hasta la fecha suficientes estudios científicos que avalen la efectividad de los poderes curativos que se le atribuyen.

 Los nicaragüenses llegaron a reverenciar al noni con más fervor que el que se observa entre los chinos por el ginsen.  La finca El Encanto, fundada en el 2005, estuvo cerca de convertirse en una finca productora de noni. Sin embargo, el sentido común nos hizo dudar de la efectividad de la fórmula comercial del noni, debido a que se ofrecía como una cura para toda clase de enfermedades, incluyendo cáncer, SIDA, diabetes, Alzheimer, baja y alta presión arterial, falta de apetito sexual, etc. etc. Efectivamente, poco tiempo después, muchas personas comenzaron a desencantarse al no obtener los resultados buscados en la cura de sus enfermedades, marcando así el principio del fin del noni. El golpe final vino cuando algunas personas, extrapolando los poderes curativos de la planta, pensaron que si dos cucharadas diarias traían beneficios medicinales a sus dolencias, un vaso podría multiplicar y acelerar los efectos curativos esperados. El resultado fue totalmente inverso, ya que el consumo excesivo de la planta produjo enfermedades adicionales entre los consumidores, sellando de esta manera el destino del noni en Nicaragua y en otros países latinoamericanos.
